Since September Emma has noticed some significant improvements in her Makeup and Artwork. She is noticing her SFX makeup to be more realistic, her photo’s to be cleaner and more descriptive, and her concepts to have more consistency and depth.
She has been working steadily to develop her skills with the goal of ‘creeping people out’. She knew she had achieved this when her work was removed from the exhibition walls of the quiet space… because it was just ‘too creepy’…
As Emma and I discussed the context of her work, outside her niche, we realized that she is asking similar questions in her Makeup and Artwork as she is in her academic writing and research.
We identified the some of the key questions informing her inquiry to be:
How crime affects our society
How and why it happens
How do people perceive it
Who are the ‘criminals’
I want to encourage Emma to intentionally bring more of her academic questions to her Art practice.
This manner of questioning is powerful. It is powerful in every medium, it is not exclusive to reading and writing. Critical thinking and questioning in the Visual Arts as the method leads to comprehensive detailed work that distinguishes mature and accomplished artists from the rest.
I am committed to working with Emma next year, to witness this intentional her work transform
Here is my very low quality, slightly awkward avant-garde makeup tutorial to complete my film credit!
I have never really filmed myself doing my makeup so this was very new to me. I do not have any “good” filming equipment whatsoever, and my phone didn’t have enough space (and wouldn’t sit up) so I had to use my laptop’s camera, which is better than nothing despite its questionable quality. My goal was to create a simple tutorial

I recently found an artist, Chet Zar, who has completely inspired me with my own artistry! He does a mix of painting, film animation, sculpture and special effects like I do. His work is very dark and makes you think, which is what my goal is while doing my art.
One of my favourite’s that I found was this crazy one, so I decided to recreate it in my own way –
This took me about 2 1/2 hours to do, which was noticeably longer than my makeup looks usually take. I figure it’s because I really took my time to build up a different facial structure and used more than one medium.
I started with moulding layers of rolled out cotton balls with liquid latex to create the alien-esque face shape I wanted. My goal was to have the bloody mouth melting straight down from the nose.
Once many layers of cotton upon latex were applied, I pulled the cheeks upwards to give the face a lifting illusion and made a few gaps and holes in the face.
I then adhered about 4 pieces of long rolled out cotton to my chin and upper neck (dipped in liquid latex) to give the dripping mouth a thicker base. For the lovely mouth, I made a mix of gelatin, glycerin and water and dripped it down my neck using those pieces of cotton as a foundation for the cotton. I layered and layered the gelatin mixture until I had the amount of desired drips. I also added some gelatin to the browbone, to make it look like it’s slightly dripping over the eye.
To paint I used a mixture of water and alcohol activated paints, and lightly stippled browns, greens and reds in the parts which I wanted to sink in more, and used a very sheer coat of white on the high points of the face. I painted the hollows of the eyes black and took it down to make it look like something dark had seeped from the eye down the face. For the mouth area, I used brown and red paints as well as coagulated blood.
I was pleasantly surprised as to how this came out! I think it would’ve been really cool to use a bald cap and cover the entire head like in the original Chet Zar painting, so maybe I’ll try that someday.
This is my first attempt at recreating a face chart created by another artist, this one being by @milk1422 on Instagram.
I have been stuck in a creative rut for a while now, and I find these face charts make it a lot easier to create something unique and creative quickly!
I am quite pleased as to how this turned out. It doesn’t look identical to the original chart, as I did my own similar interpretation with the lines and colour story used in the original one. I think this looks really cool and I would definitely like to do more of these inspired looks in the future.

Arts Assessment from Maddy- 9:30am Mon, Feb 6th
This is was my contribution for the #insideoutchallenge created by an Instagram makeup artist (@lilmoonchildd) in effort to create awareness on mental illness. The challenge is to recreate what your mental illness would look like to you inside on one half of your face, with the other being normal.
I struggle every day with depression and anxiety. Every moment of my every day is taken over by my mental illness. This causes me to not be able to do simple things that most people take for granted such as ordering a drink at a coffee shop, having a conversation with someone, going to a certain place, etc. I will literally wait outside a Starbucks, looking in the window, and walk in once a line of at least two people has formed to get in to take my order, as I need to read the menu for what I want and need time to prepare myself. Which reading it sounds really stupid and insane, but I physically and mentally cannot do it any other way.
My life is restricted because of this, and I miss out on so many opportunities because my anxiety forces me to not be able to. It feels like my brain and thoughts are in a prison, and I have no way of controlling them or getting out. I don’t find myself sharing this with many people because it is very difficult for those who have never dealt with any sort of related issues to comprehend what it’s like.
People usually say “just relax!” or “you’re too young to have anxiety!” which really hurts. We live in a society that conceives mental illness as something that is scary and wrong, therefore it is ignored and stigmatized.
I did some research to make myself sound smart, and found out that 1 in 4 people worldwide will have a mental or neurological disorder at some point in their lives. Currently, more than 40% of the world’s countries have no mental health policy, and over 30% have no mental health program. That’s really sad. I believe that it is so important to help educate our friends, family, peers, the general public and ourselves on the basics of mental health. Being mindful on how to treat someone dealing with mental issues and knowing what it is can make a much bigger positive impact on someone than you would think.
This creation is gruesome yet still has meaning behind it. My initial plan for this was to have pieces of skin peeling off, each one safety pinned together with the blood and meat under the skin being exposed underneath. The statement behind this is that we are all the same underneath our skin, no matter what our looks, race, opinions, style may be.
To do this, I poured about 5 layers of liquid latex on a plate, letting each one dry before applying the next one. Once done I peeled it off and cut the latex piece into smaller “skin flaps” to fit the areas of my face I wanted to cover. I covered them with a foundation that matches my skin tone to make it look like my actual skin. I put liquid latex and thinned out pieces of cotton balls on the spots of my face where the skin flaps wouldn’t be, and picked at it once dried to add texture to my new exposed flesh. I painted with it a thin wash of red and black paints and then proceeded to adhere the latex pieces on with more liquid latex. I took the safety pins and attached each skin flap together (and stabbed my real skin while doing it) to add more of an impact on the effect. I took a stipple sponge and added thick stage blood to the areas around each safety pin and the edges of the latex pieces. I finally took liquid blood and sprayed it on the uncovered areas of my real face and neck.
I am quite pleased with how this turned out. I do definitely think that this makes a statement, although if I’m not sure if it’s very easy to pick up on what it means right away by simply looking at the photo. I might redo a different version of this one sometime in the future, and try different techniques to sell the concept a bit more.
This look is definitely very eye-catching! I had really enjoyed making my loose eyeball in one of the looks I did a couple months ago, and I had a craving to do more. This is kind of like the upgraded version of that one. Somehow in my deranged, disturbing mind I came up with the idea of having a bunch of eyeballs protruding from my eye area.
To make the eyeballs, I sculpted them using cotton balls and rolling them in liquid latex. I made about 20 different eyeballs, varying in different sizes. Once they dried, I painted on a thin wash of a yellowish brown colour to give a more realistic effect, and then added the details.
I covered my real eye with a cotton pad, which is my favourite method since one usually covers the entire eye and eyebrow. I stippled liquid latex over it carefully and added some tissue around and over the cotton pad to blend it into the skin. With more latex soaked tissue, I built a “wall” around the area of my eye I just covered to create the hole for my new eyeballs. I stuck them all in individually with liqud latex and added small pieces of thinned out cotton balls around them to hold them all there.
Once the prosthetic part was done, I painted the whole thing with red, brown and black water activated paints and drowned myself in blood. I made sure to not completely cover the eyes in blood so the details wouldn’t get lost.
I love creating these eyeballs. I want to explore making different body parts in the future, like fingers or maybe organs. I also think it would look super cool to do this on both eyes, although I’d have to do that on a model considering it’s very difficult to maneuver around with one eye covered, let alone two.
